History
Dunlop is named after John Boyd Dunlop, the Scottish veterinarian who developed a practical pneumatic tyre in Belfast in 1888; a company based on his patent was set up the following year. Over the twentieth century the brand was split between several owners. Sumitomo Rubber Industries of Kobe, Japan, used it in Asia from the 1980s, while Goodyear held the rights in Europe and North America until Sumitomo acquired them in 2025, bringing the brand back under one roof. Dunlop motorcycle tyres for the American market have long been made in Buffalo, New York, and the brand is a fixture of road racing, from the Isle of Man TT to the Moto2 and Moto3 classes.
The motorcycle range covers almost every discipline. Sport riders can choose from the SportSmart family and the track-focused GP Racer and KR race tyres, while RoadSmart tyres target sport-touring. Adventure bikes are served by the Trailmax series, cruisers and baggers by the American Elite and Elite 4, and classic machines by the TT100 GP. For off-road riding there is the Geomax motocross and enduro range, plus tyres for scooters and small bikes.
